Mentoring and peer support

A central part of DTC practice concerns the encouragement of responsible agency in the members, an element of empowerment. Systems for mutual support and encouragement promote this.

Mentoring

TC members mentor prospective members in the preparatory groups, giving them advice and modelling behaviours and attitudes. Senior members fulfil a similar function in the TC itself. The intention is for members to look to each other, particularly more senior members and those making progress, rather than to staff, with whom they are less likely to identify (if they do it is often via idealisation, thinking of staff as representing an unattainable standard of health and functioning). The therapeutic principle behind this is the instillation of hope (Yalom and Leszcz 2005); seeing other members with similar problems improving, recovering and changing makes it seem more possible.
